Consumer Electronics Are Broken

Your correspondent decided to purchase a copy of Stranger Than Fiction to test drive his uncle’s new high-definition and flat screen entertainment system. This setup represents the latest in new consumer electronics by a variety of “top” manufacturers like Sony.

I assumed that these firms would learn after 15 years in business (and millions of units sold) that the design and integration of consumer electronics is a daunting task even for the saavy consumer.

There simply is no excuse as to why it must be hard to setup, wire and use. Your correspondent struggled for 30 minutes to get the DVD to play. But victory — while painful — was achieved eventually, mostly by accident.
